Supervisor, Transportation Operations and Safety

Public Works – Transportation 

Status: Regular Full Time

Salary Range: $100,172 – $125,213 per hour (plus comprehensive benefits and vacation accrual)

Work Mode: Hybrid; 1 day on-site per week which can increase based on operational requirements *see below for more details about this work mode. 

Location: 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton ON

Hours of work: 35 Hours per week

 

Who we are: The Transportation team constructs, operates, plans and maintains a multi-modal network of assets such as roadways, bridges, sidewalks and multi-use trails, stormwater infrastructure, street-lighting, traffic signals, noise and retaining walls, signs, safety barriers and street trees.

Reports to: Manager, Transportation Operations

Team Structure: Leads a team of 7 including Specialists and Technical Analysts

 

What you will do in this role:  

  • Responsible for supervising the Transportation Operations and Safety Group through a variety of activities such as hiring, evaluating, coaching, allocating the work of the team, developing, motivating, training and disciplining to ensure safety, quality, cost effectiveness and the timely delivery of services
  • Responsible for the acquisition, implementation, integration, population of data and maintenance of the Traffic Engineering Software (TES) application
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of Region of Peel specific Safety Performance Functions Ensures that a Network Screening is conducted to identify and rank intersections and road sections based on the Potential for Safety Improvement
  • Ensures that In-Service and proposed construction Traffic Safety Audits are conducted based on the Network Screening and other identified areas Develops Education and Outreach programs, along with public relations materials to help communicate safety messages and sustainable transportation initiatives to residents and road users in the Region of Peel
  • Provides Region of Peel representation at various committees such as the Road Safety Committee of Ontario (ROSCO), Brampton Road Safety Committee and Road Safety Mississauga
  • Prepares, administers and monitors the current operating and capital budgets
  • Identifies locations that may benefit from new technology and provide recommendations for potential pilot programs for the testing of new equipment to enhance safety
  • Administers ongoing annual traffic safety programs ensuring adherence to program schedules, updates programs as required, and recommends action based on results.
  • Responsible for the generation of an Annual Road Safety Report to present collision statistics, trending information, performance measures and mitigative measures to Regional Council
  • Provides support services in the field of traffic safety to other groups including, but not limited to Caledon Emergency Services, Peel Regional Police, Ontario Provincial Police, Risk Management Group, Infrastructure Planning and Studies Group, Road Operations and Maintenance, Traffic Engineering
  • Responds both verbally and in writing to complaints or enquiries from the public, internal clients, Councillors and other external agencies
  • Reviews and proposes the sections user fees for approval by Regional Council Performs other duties as required

What the role requires:

  • Degree or diploma in Civil or Transportation Engineering and formal computer programming/applications
  • Eight years of direct related experience; At least seven years of experience in a Traffic Safety and/or Traffic Operations field
  • Previous supervisory experience and demonstrated leadership skills to build and maintain strong teams to ensure high standards of professional service Communication Skills
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable legislations, policies and standards
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to build and maintain strong teams to ensure high standards of professional service
  • Strong knowledge of related traffic engineering computer software, computer hardware and be proficient in MS Office
  • Valid class “G” driver’s license in good standing
  • Develop coalitions, partnerships, or collaborative relationships with external contacts in order to achieve major program objectives.
  • Exercises sound judgment in decision making based on accepted technical, industry, professional standards or government guidelines or legislation.
  • Combination of education and experience may be considered

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work effectively
  • Requires very strong leadership, facilitation, communication, written, presentation, interpersonal, organizational skills along with strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Requires superior organizational time management skills along with strong analytical, problem solving, and project management skills to Interpret and evaluate collision information trends and information to improve existing programs or to develop new approaches or processes to enhance the safety of all road users in the Region of Peel.

Work Mode & Job Location:
In this role, you’ll enjoy the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement. This means you’ll have the ability to work off-site and on-site as needed, depending on operational needs at the

10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton ON worksite. The frequency of on-site work may vary from week to week, depending on operational demands, which can evolve over time.

 

It’s important to note that your off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario. This ensures that we’re compliant with all regulations and policies.
