Job Description

The Paramedic Communications Superintendent works collaboratively with Operations Superintendents, Paramedics, and MCACC staff to provide expertise on Peel Regional Paramedic Services’ Deployment and Utilization Strategy and make daily Paramedic Operations decisions from the Communications Centre.

 

Staffing Coordination and Communication:

  • Build internal and partner relationships to support the daily operations of the Paramedic Service
  • Receive staffing updates throughout the shift and communicate to MCACC

System Monitoring and Safety Assurance:

  • Monitor Peel Region call volume demand and system status effectively through various information technology tools (Duty Roster, Dashboard, Maps, CAD, etc.)
  • Liaise with MCACC and the Paramedic Operations Superintendents to ensure Paramedic safety when attending calls

Emergency Response Coordination:

  • Communication point-person for Mass Casualty Incidents, coordinating necessary responses
  • Coordinate with allied agencies, manage resource coordination during major incidents, ensure effective responses to disruptions in the working environment

Resource Management and Operational Support:

  • Monitor ambulances at hospitals and assist with offload delay management
  • Monitor ambulance status and availability changes and assist as required with necessary communication
  • Receive notifications regarding equipment, personnel, and system changes and directly communicate action items as required

Operational Efficiency and Compliance:

  • Direct ambulance fleet movements, manage system performance, and oversee compliance with deployment plan and legislated requirements and standards
  • Apply and share medical expertise with ACOs where appropriate

Team Supervision and Performance Management:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development modelling inclusive behaviours and proactively managing bias
  • Manage deployment grievances and recommend actions when necessary

What the role requires: 

  • Ambulance and Emergency Care/Paramedic Diploma and Provincial Certification AEMCA (Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant)
  • 3 years’ experience supervising employees, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Strong understanding of Ambulance Communication Centre operations
  • Combination of education and experience may be considered

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and public relations skills
  • Able to make accurate, informed decisions with measurable positive outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a high-stress and dynamic environment
  • Able to conduct investigations, formulate comprehensive and sound analysis
  • Experience drafting reports under time-constrained deadlines
  • Change management expertise to lead and implement meaningful change
  • Computer and IT proficiency including Microsoft Office 365, ability to learn and use new and proprietary platforms as required in daily functions on-site at MCACC
  • Polished negotiation, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong research skills using evidence informed decision-making best practices
