The Bachelor of Design in Graphic Design Mission Statement: The BDGD program prepares students to be skilled visual communicators and empathetic citizen of the world through experiential learning, shared community dialogue and skilled practice and technical development while questioning and self-reflecting on the role and responsibilities of a contemporary designer.
Duties: The Graphic Design Department is seeking a half-time Professor to teach in the BA Major, Graphic Design Program.
The Web Design/User Interface Design/User Experience Design Professor position is a new addition to our department, created to better serve our students and the local design community. The successful candidate will help develop a new set of courses in web and mobile design, interface design, and user experience design; work with other faculty to teach these courses; and update these courses as needed to ensure that students acquire up-to-date skills in their learning experience. This is a rare opportunity to help build a new web/ui/ux curriculum from the ground up. The singular advantage of a half-time position (two classes per term, two terms per year) is that the successful candidate will be able to shape the learning and skills of the next generation of web designers while maintaining his/her own practice, thereby remaining current in this dynamic field.
Applicants must demonstrate a solid grasp of current best-practices in web/mobile/ui/ux design, as well as a solid grasp of the appropriate software (InVision, Sketch, Adobe UX, etc.) and of the fundamentals of HTML, CSS and JS. The ideal candidate will be able to balance teaching both theoretical design learning and pragmatic, hands-on industry skills. Practical work experience is essential. Preference will be given to candidates with the ability to teach the courses described, who also possess strong practical work experience. The ideal candidate possesses both creative and technical aptitude, and can demonstrate the ability to work well as a member of our team.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
Required Qualifications: Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
NOTE: While a Master's degree is preferred, an exception may be considered if a candidate has a Bachelor's degree and very significant, highly-regarded industry experience that has been recognized by industry and/or the candidate's peers.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the professional skills required for web and interaction design including:
HTML, CSS and JS
development frameworks and media management
user interface and user experience design;
The candidate will also possess:
practical experience in web/UI/UX design, and will
demonstrate skills in studio work related to the profession
All eligible candidates should be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite as it applies to this field, as well as the Mac operating system.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous teaching experience within the course topic areas or relevant professional work demonstrating aptitude in the course material.
