Senior Engineer, Technology Development

Job Overview
Reporting to the manager of operations technology, you are responsible for building and developing a program and suite of technology solutions to meet the challenges we face in our base plant oil sands operations. You will be required to support the development of a technology portfolio for extraction and tailings program.
Key Accountabilities

  • Driving technology development from while providing successful commercial options for our business
  • Provide technical leadership and senior engineering insight into our hot water extraction and tailings technology development programs
  • Lead various technology projects through all of the stages of development from literature review to bench scale to field piloting
  • Development of scopes of work (SoW) and experimental plans for technology validation
  • Lead multidiscipline technology teams while driving innovation and providing results
  • Stewardship of project costs, scope and schedule
  • Provide subject expertise to all aspects of our extraction and tailings business
  • Be accountable for oversight of technology development and validation testing with project costs ranging from $50K -$5M
  • Provide technical mentorship for contract personnel, vendors, universities and external technical working groups

Required Qualifications
Experience and Education:

  • Minimum 12 years of technical experience with at least three years working at an oil sands or relevant mineral processing facility
  • Minimum six years of direct extraction and/or tailings oil sands experience
  • Hands on experience with research, technology development or field piloting
  • Engineering or science degree from an accredited institution (chemical, materials, mechanical or mining preferred)
  • Ph.D. or MSc. Degree in a relevant research area

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Complex and in-depth knowledge of tailings and extraction processes and the underlying technical fundamentals
  • You demonstrate the ability to collaborate and are able deliver results through an integrated team approach
  • You have a questioning attitude, check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions and learn to anticipate potential problems and look for opportunities
  • You value integrity and accountability and expect others to do the same

Working Conditions

  • This position will be based in Calgary with occasional travel to Suncor’s operating facilities as well as national and international travel to visit vendors and attend conferences
  • This position involves a combination of office and field work
  • During bench scale and pilot scale trials, you may need to spend extended amounts of time at operating sites or vendor locations
