Reports to: Chief Strategy and Financial Officer
We are looking for a motivated and experienced Director of Operational Excellence to drive two high-impact areas of focus within the Foundation, the Resuscitation Program and the Community Hypertension Prevention Initiative (CHPI).
The Director of Operational Excellence will be responsible for leading all aspects of both initiatives including areas such as marketing, operations and product development. Responsible for a team of approximately 30 people, we are looking for a proven leader who has experience bringing initiatives to market and also growing existing areas within an organization.
In addition, the Director will have strong relationships with senior leaders across functional departments and provinces to support, develop and prioritize other transformational projects for maximum impact.
As many as 45,000 cardiac arrests occur in Canada every year. Every year our National instructor network, of over 10,000 individuals, effectively delivers training courses (e.g., Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, First Aid etc.) to over 500,000 Canadians. Resuscitation is a core mission priority for Heart and Stroke; there is significant potential to grow the program’s mission impact.
About the CHPI
Heart & Stroke’s CHPI is a new and innovative community-based prevention program focused on stopping pre-hypertensive individuals from developing hypertension (high blood pressure) by helping them become more physically active, improve their diet, and stop smoking. For program participants, this free CHPI program integrates local community partnerships, best-in-class lifestyle management resources, coaching and digital technology to support participants in engaging in and sustaining healthy behaviours as they age. The program is the first health program in Canada funded through a social impact bond or ‘pay for success’ model. CHPI is backed by leading social impact investors including Telus Ventures and the McConnell Foundation; it serves as an innovative growth model at Heart and Stroke.
Program Management and Delivery
Responsible for leading the development and execution of transformational programs, driving a positive constituent experience, mission impact and revenue growth.
Work with project and program management leadership to understand project activities and deliverables. Facilitate definition of new project activities and deliverables for successful implementation.
Provide project and program management leadership as a critical partner with the team members of any transformational project. Design and implement standard performance indicators, ensuring that team members understand and use these indicators for managing and evaluating their operations;
Develop and maintain working relationships with vendors, business partners, government agencies, community stakeholders, and other key program stakeholders.
Ensure that new projects / products are launched effectively with a go-to-market end-to-end plan; include appropriate ongoing support and management so that projects incorporate a focus on a great client experience.
Ensure that adequate support structures are in place to support project implementation.
Drive continuous improvement to support a high-performance culture.
Human Resource Management:
Lead the development of a highly effective team, ensuring high standards of delivery, competence and values are maintained and that staff are well supported in fulfilling their accountabilities, developing their skills and achieving their career potential. Specifically:
Providing clear direction on business goals and priorities; ensure optimal deployment of resources to achieve business goals
Establish team performance plan; build a strong team and develop effective lateral relationships cross functionally
Establish performance plan and objectives and review on an ongoing basis; provide coaching and feedback to direct reports
As required, recruit skilled talent in support of current and future needs. Familiarize and comply with Heart & Stroke policies.
Provide coaching and development to team members and implement initiatives that effectively inspires loyalty and philanthropy amongst our supporters.
Demonstrate the values through behaviours.
Ensure accurate administration of employee related information: absence records, vacation, title, etc.
Operations, Business Planning, and Budget Management:
Manage the development of annual business plans, financial outlooks and budgets.
Comply with all policies and practices, including Financial, Accounting, IT, Contract and Purchasing, and compliance with the Code of Professional Conduct.
Ensure direct reports are in full compliance with policies and practices.
Ensure Supplier relationships are properly established, clearly documented and managed in accordance with Contract and Purchasing Policies.
Work with external partners, consultants and associated advisory groups/committees to engage required expertise and direction in developing and/or implementing plans.

Undergrad in business, or a related field required; MBA is an asset.
10+ years of relevant experience in sales or operational leadership roles within an organization.
Experience with change management methodologies, different business models and sales management methodologies.
Proven ability to manage pipelines and build reliable sales/operational forecasts. Experience in creating a growth culture and an entrepreneurial mindset in teams.
Demonstrates a data-driven approach leading to results.
Developing and delivering effective presentations.
Experience with launching large scale initiatives that include learning as core elements of the project.
Experience with federal and provincial government relations is an asset, but not mandatory.
Strong leadership skills, demonstrated coaching capability and the ability to impact and influence those who do not have a direct reporting relationship
Significant experience with team facilitation and relationship building with internal stakeholders.
Demonstrated project management and strong organizational and strong communication skills, including the ability to interface effectively with all levels of management
Demonstrated superior analytical and critical thinking skills
Demonstrated ability to initiate, prioritize, and manage multiple projects
Fluent with technology solutions to manage projects including appropriate Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
Strong digital fluency including CRM and social media.
Strong Excel and PowerPoint presentation experience
Highly developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively on cross-functional teams
A key activity of this role is the ability to work across Foundation departments and to communicate effectively with various internal and external contacts. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are mandatory.
Fluency in French is an asset, but is not mandatory.
Cross country travel may be required / dependent on projects.
